Pregnancy and postpartum can bring emotional ups and downs. If you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or down, you are not alone. Learn to recognize the signs and discover where to find support. Treatment options are available, including therapy and medication. In addition to professional help, here are some simple ways to care for your mental health as a mom.
• Find your circle.
Connect with other moms through local or online groups. Sharing your journey—and hearing others’—can make you feel less alone. Postpartum Support International (PSI) and Postpartum Progress® offer communities where moms support moms, no matter where you live.
• Take time for yourself.
Step outside, soak in a quiet bath, or simply breathe. Ask your partner, a loved one, or a babysitter to step in so you can enjoy a break—even a short one.
• Do what makes you smile.
Whether it is reading, music, or your favorite show, carve out a moment each day just for something you enjoy.
• Let go of ‘perfect’.
You do not need to do it all or have a spotless house. Focus on what matters most and give yourself grace.
• Ask for support.
Need help with the baby or chores? Do not hesitate to ask family or friends. You deserve the same care you give others.
• Sleep when the baby sleeps.
Rest is not a luxury—it is essential. Try to nap when your baby does to recharge your body and mind.
• Stay connected.
Spend time with adults who lift you up—friends, family, your partner. These moments of connection can be incredibly grounding.
