What To Do Before, During and After Shots
Getting the jab is a big deal for children. It is important to help them with a smooth vaccination journey and experience.
Before the visit
- Open a conversation by asking your child how they are feeling about the upcoming vaccination.
- Explain to them why vaccines are important.
- Keep your responses to their questions kid-friendly.
- If your child is scared, listen to how they are feeling and empathize with their fear.
- Bring with you your child’s favorite toy, book or blanket to ensure comfort during the shot.
During the visit
- Distract and comfort your child by cuddling, singing, talking softly or pointing out interesting things in the room.
- Smile and make eye contact with your child, assuring that everything is okay.
- Take deep breaths with your child to prevent crying and do not scold them if they cry.
- Fainting (syncope) among adolescents can be common, have them stay seated for at least 15 minutes to avoid injuries that can occur from a fall.
After the visit
- Tell your child to inform you if they are not feeling well.
- Use a cool, damp cloth to help reduce redness, soreness and swelling of the injection site.
- Offer liquids often.
- If there is fever, reduce temperature with lukewarm water sponge bath.
- Follow your child’s doctor prescription for fever and pain.
- Pay extra attention to your child for a few days and if you see something that concerns you, call your child’s doctor.
