Reducing Pollen Allergy Triggers
Help prevent allergic reactions to pollen by minimizing exposure to it, a strategy known as environmental control. Here are some steps you can take:
- Start allergy medication early: Begin treatment about two weeks before pollen season to help reduce symptoms or as advised by your medical doctor.
- Limit outdoor exposure: Stay indoors when pollen levels are high and keep windows closed during peak pollen times.
- Use clean indoor air: Run air conditioning or air purifiers with HEPA filters to help reduce pollen inside the home.
- Protect yourself outdoors: Wear sunglasses, a hat, or a mask to keep pollen away from your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Keep pollen out of the house: Remove shoes at the door and change clothes after outdoor activities.
- Shower before bedtime: This helps wash pollen off your body and prevents it from getting on your bedding.
- Clean regularly: Wash bedding weekly and clean floors, curtains, and furniture to reduce indoor allergens.
- Manage pet exposure: Wipe or bathe pets that spend time outdoors to prevent them from bringing pollen inside.
- Dry clothes indoors: Avoid hanging laundry outside where pollen can stick to fabrics.
