Help Save Someone in Emotional Pain

Emotional pain is a rising concern especially for young people. Here are five steps on how to help someone in emotional pain.

1. ASK. Do not be afraid to ask directly questions like if they are okay or if they are thinking of hurting or killing themselves.

2. KEEP THEM SAFE. Make sure that they have reduced or no access to lethal items or places.

3. BE THERE. Listen carefully and acknowledge their feelings. Let them know they have been heard.

4. STAY CONNECTED. Tell them they are not alone, that others care, that you are there to support them. Follow up and stay in touch even after the crisis.

5. PHONE A HELPLINE. There are free crisis lifelines that you can find help and support, like the NATIONAL MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS HOTLINE 0917-899-USAP.
