You may have heard of the word “antioxidant” countless times from your health buff friends or health shows, but what exactly does the word mean and how does it benefit you?

Antioxidants are substances that protect cells from the damage caused by free radicals (unstable molecules made by the process of oxidation during normal metabolism).

Our body already has antioxidants; they’re part of our body’s natural defense. However, you can also increase your body’s antioxidants, especially now when it’s important to look after your health.

Here are a few food choices that can naturally boost your intake of antioxidants.

Spices and everything nice. You can surely find spices in your kitchen or in your garden. You can also easily grow your own herbs at home. Take your pick among turmeric, basil, rosemary, or any other spice or herb that you know.

More leafy greens. When talking about health, leafy greens are always mentioned and it’s for a good reason. They’re packed with all the health benefits— vitamins, fiber, minerals, and antioxidants.

Go nuts. There are tons of ways on how to add nuts to your everyday meals. You can simply snack on them or crush and add them to your salads.

Berry sweets. For the sweet-toothed, you can munch on berries guilt-free knowing the fruit contains antioxidants. You can also add them to your smoothies or cereals.
