This Healthy Aging Month, we give you tips on how to maintain, even improve, your health as you age.
1. Stay physically active
Moving more and sitting less can help prevent, delay, and manage chronic diseases; improve balance and stamina; reduce risk of falls; and improve brain health.
2. Stay socially active
Higher levels of social activity with family, friends and your community can help you experience more positive moods, fewer negative feelings, and higher levels of physical activity.
3. Follow a healthy, well-balanced diet
Make healthy choices - like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, low-fat dairy products, and water.
4. Get regular check-ups
Visit your doctor for preventive services, not only when you’re sick. This can prevent disease or ensure early diagnosis, when treatment is more effective.
5. Quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption
The health benefits of quitting smoking include lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and heart rate; a lower risk of cancer, diabetes, and lung damage; and stronger bones, muscles, and immune system. Limiting alcohol consumption will decrease the mortality risk associated with drinking alcohol.
6. Get enough sleep
Getting seven to eight hours of sleep every night has been proven to lower the risk of heart disease and stroke, reduce stress and depression, lower the risk of obesity, reduce inflammation, improve focus and concentration.
7. Accept your age
There is evidence that people who maintain a positive attitude about aging live longer and may recover better from a disability. Aging is inevitable and learning to embrace it can make all the difference.
